With 1,600 students, this school is the largest partner within the University of Applied Sciences Of Western Switzerland (HES-SO). The HEIG-VD is ideally located on an urban campus in the town of Yverdon-les-Bains, which fosters its integration into the network of the economy as well as individual companies.
Summer School 2007
The summer school is jointly organized by HEIG-VD (Switzerland), SJSU, CSULB and CSUF. It will be held during 3 weeks from July 16 to August 3 at HEIG-VD in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland offering courses in Computer Science and Networking.
The goal of this summer school is to provide an opportunity for international collaboration and cultural exchange between American and Swiss students. Students from Switzerland and the US will have the possibility to attend courses taught in English by lecturers from all participating universities.
Practice oriented scientific training
At the HEIG-VD, the training program is focused on putting theoretical knowledge into practice. As courses are given by scientist as well as practitioners, students are progressively led toward a global and cross-disciplinary approach. Thus they are trained to become active players in the field of engineering or economics, ready to create, design, innovate, pilot, support and even set up their own business.
Modules
Students can register for one of two proposed course modules.
- Module 1: Computer Science
- Evolutionary algorithms
- Agent- based systems
- Ubiquitous computing
- Development of data centric J2EE Web Applications
- Module 2: Networking
- Grid Computing
- Distributed computing
- Malware analysis
- Wireless network security
The volume of each module will be 25 hours per week approximately during 3 weeks, including in-class teaching and lab work.
Housing
Student accommodations will be located in Lausanne, 20 minutes by train from Yverdon-les-Bains. Lausanne, the capital of the Swiss canton of Vaud, is a medium sized city and host to the International Olympic Committee and two major universities. Located at the lake of Geneva and 30 minutes from the Alps, Lausanne is a perfect place for outdoor activities. Since Lausanne is in the center of Europe, just 1 hour away from France, 2 hours from Italy, 2 hours from Germany, it is a perfect starting point to explore other European countries.
The large student population makes for a lively nightlife and arts community. You'll also find a number of quality restaurants and two dozen museums of note, including the Olympic Museum and the offbeat Collection de l'Art Brut.
Activities
During the three weeks, many activities will be organized such as:
- a trip to the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival (the one of Deep Purple's “Smoke on the Water”)
- a trip to the Paléo Festival which is the biggest Swiss open festival.
- barbecues at the lake
- mountain hiking
- a trip to the beautiful Swiss vineyards and castles
